Exhibit: Our Towns

The history of our island’s towns using pioneer diaries, photographs, maps, and artifacts from our collection. Areas to be highlighted: Clinton, Langley, Freeland, Greenbank, Coupeville, Coveland/San de Fuca, Oak Harbor, Deception Pass, Camano Island, Smith Island, Baby Island, and Hat Island.

January 1-27
Trains On Whidbey? 
A Community Collection of model trains and memorabilia to celebrate the fact that Whidbey Island was not chosen by the Northern Pacific as its Northwest rail terminus (under serious consideration in 1869!).

February 12 – April 27th
Antique Doll Exhibit  Another Community Collection of fine and fun dolls and their accoutrements.  For all ages.

March 1 & 2

Penn Cove Mussel Fest  Our Central Whidbey community celebrates the deliciously world-famous Penn Cove mussel.  Lots of great food and family fun!

March 15  1:30pm-4:30pm

Musically Speaking…  Musical artist, Beverly Heising presents a fun workshop for young folks (recommended 6-10yrs) that explores how native peoples used music as a form of communication.  Participants make their own primitive instruments and make a recording to keep! Registration $10.  Please call 360-678-3310.

March 18

Craftsman Whidbey   Exploring the Arts and Crafts movement on Whidbey Island in the early 20th century.  Featuring sessions on architecture, furniture, textiles, glass, and more! Call 360-678-3310 for details. $10 per monthly session.

April 5

First Farmers Market  Coupeville’s quaint farmers market celebrates its 30th year of bringing you the finest and the freshest!

April 15

Craftsman Whidbey   Exploring the Arts and Crafts movement on Whidbey Island in the early 20th century.  This session explores the furniture of the Craftsman period, led by two local furniture makers.  Call 360-678-3310 for details. $10 per monthly session.

May 17

Penn Cove Water Festival  Native racing canoes fill Penn Cove, as does the aroma of barbequed salmon, Indian fry-bread, and sights and sounds of native dancers.  A Coupeville tradition!

May 25

Sunnyside Cemetery Tour  Local Historian Roger Sherman leads an interesting and informative tour of this historic and scenic pioneer resting place.

Annual Fundraiser Dinner and Auction

Wharf Fest  2nd annual maritime celebration features vintage boats, maritime activities, kid stuff, and of course, PIRATES!  A model ship and maritime artifacts exhibit are featured at the Museum.

July 12

Annual Fundraiser Dinner and Auction  A Native American-influenced dinner and program are featured at the scenic Dugualla Bay Clubhouse on the shores of the Bay.

August 9

Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival  Artists and crafters fill the streets of Coupeville for this annual community fundraiser.  Don’t miss this one!

August 23

“New Light on Old Buildings” – a plein-air painting class sponsored by the Island County Historical Society.  Join us on Saturday August 23rd, from 9 until 4pm.   Well-known local artist and museum educator Gordon Grant will provide knowledgeable and personal attention to all your day’s work.  In the morning we will paint an historic home; in the afternoon, an historic barn.  Finished and framed work will hang on display at the museum and be for sale – benefiting the artist and the museum!  This monthly painting class is just one of the Historical Society’s ways to celebrate and preserve history.  Sign up now – class must have at least three students: if three are signed up, the fee is $95 per student (lunch included.)  Four students and the fee drops to $75; more than four students, registration is $65.  Call 678-3310 for details and to sign up!

Coupeville Halloween Torchlight Parade  A fun, new costume parade by torchlight (flashlights) begins at dusk.  Lots of kids activities follow the parade.  Help  recognize and celebrate Fire Prevention Month!

Christmas In Our Town, 1895  A Victorian Christmas parlor exhibit adorns the Museum’s Side Room.

Holiday Feast and Fundraiser  Help the Historical Society have a Merry Christmas, and get a jump on a Happy New Year!
