<image:title>Events - Who Was First? - An upcoming history talk at the Coupeville Library May 11, 2024 at 1PM. Stars & Stripes on the Sound: The First Non-Indigenous Americans on the Salish Sea.</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1846 the United States gained control of what is now referred to as the Salish Sea, or Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound. Considering this fact, it is surprising that the answer to the following question remains shrouded in mystery… Who were the first people to fly the United States flag on the Salish Sea? Michael “Tug” Buse is especially interested in the American contribution to the early maritime history of what is now Western Washington. He published two articles in Pacific Northwest Quarterly on the subject of American firsts on the Salish Sea with regards to steam navigation. Working on these articles, Buse started wondering: who were the first non-Indigenous Americans to really enter the inland waters of what is now Washington State, what was the name of their vessel, when were they on Puget Sound, and why did they explore these waters? Come see and experience a presentation on Indigenous, as well as non-Indigenous, American history on the Salish Sea, and explore these questions with a historian who is very passionate about them! Michael “Tug” Buse was born and raised on the Salish Sea and is fascinated with its maritime history. He has taught American History and Mass Communication in Iowa, South Carolina, and Shenyang, China, in addition to Washington State. He currently lives in Olympia where he teaches Washington State History for Insight School of Washington, an online public school.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Grand Opening “Native Species” Exhibit - Grand Opening</image:title>
<image:caption>We are excited to announce the grand opening of our newest exhibit on April 20, 2024 from 3-6PM. The new “Native Species” exhibit is an extension of our “Native People, Native Places” exhibit in the lower portion of the museum. Fun for the whole family! The exhibit showcases the flora and fauna of Island County and how Coast Salish people used the plants and animals in their lifestyle. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 3:15, and a native blessing will follow by Pamela Seamonster. There will be a scavenger hunt for the kids, music, food and drinks, a naming contest for the fawn in the woodland exhibit, and the museum will be open for people to wander after hours. The event will also mark the debut of the museum's new tour app, which will allow visitors to hear music, watch videos, and listen to audio of information about the new exhibit. Bring headphones to listen. Admission is by donation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kumihimo is Japanese for “Gathered Threads” and was an ancient form of braiding in Japan. These decorative braids were used a decoration with Kimono and added to Samurai armor. In recent years this braiding technique picked up in popularity with artisans and craftsman. Beautiful as well as functional cords can be made with a simple disk. Threads can be laid out in a variety of colors, materials and patterns to create beautiful braids. These braids can be used in jewelry as well as other fiber arts projects.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>The Island County Historical Society was organized in 1949 in an attempt to save the Lovejoy Victorian Courthouse (built in 1891). Their hope was to create a museum to preserve and protect the artifacts, culture, and history of Island County. Despite these efforts, the Lovejoy Courthouse was declared unsafe and demolished. In 1958, the Historical Society explored the possibility of a museum in the abandoned Admiralty Head Lighthouse.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - The museum, opened in 1991, reflects the size and basic feel of the old Inn that tragically burnt in 1968, and now serves as a focal point and landmark on the waterfront of historic downtown Coupeville. A traditional wraparound porch and a drought-tolerant garden provide opportunities for unique outdoor programming.</image:title>

<image:title>Research - Janet Enzmann Archives</image:title>
<image:caption>A very important part of what we do is to serve as stewards of the written and photographic history of Island County. The Janet Enzmann Archives and Research Library was organized by our beloved volunteer, Janet Enzmann. Janet spent thousands of hours making our archival collections organized and accessible to our public – and for this, we have memorialized our Library and Archives in her honor and memory. Our Archives is always being improved and updated – because history never stops! It is a valuable resource for family historians, scholars, and students. Among the holdings of our archival collections are Island County diaries and journals, land claim records, newspapers, obituaries, letters, rare books, aerial photos, maps, event posters, videos, oral histories and thousands of photographs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Collections Home - Donate to our Collection</image:title>
<image:caption>We greatly appreciate your consideration of the ICHS Museum as the recipient of your object. It is through generous donations such as yours that gives our museum the opportunity to grow and flourish and to preserve Island County history for many generations into the future. We make every effort to maintain our mission to focus specifically on Island County history. We consider objects that are related to the residents of the island as well as any object that relates to the Island history and its environs, including prehistory. Please be aware that although we are constantly in pursuit of more space, our collections storage is very limited. We may not have the space or ability to properly care for some items. This potentially includes duplicates of items we already have in our collection. Once an item has been gifted to the museum via a simple Deed of Gift, the museum then assumes legal ownership of that object and it may be used at the discretion of management. Once possession of your object is taken, we pledge to take the best care of your object and the memories associated with that particular object. Possible donations can be submitted through email below. Collection donations are accepted on weekdays only, unless arranged by appointment.</image:caption>
