Kumihimo Brading Demonstration

Kumihimo Braiding Demonstration

Kumihimo is Japanese for “Gathered Threads” and was an ancient form of braiding in Japan. These decorative braids were used a decoration with Kimono and added to Samurai armor.

In recent years this braiding technique picked up in popularity with artisans and craftsman. Beautiful as well as functional cords can be made with a simple disk. Threads can be laid out in a variety of colors, materials and patterns to create beautiful braids. These braids can be used in jewelry as well as other fiber arts projects.

About Illene Rae Sorenson MFA:ATR

I was introduced to Fiber Arts in the 70’s while persuin my Bachelors Degree from Califronia State College San Bernadino. Textiles continue to be the primary medium and focuso f my art.

Over time I have gravitate toward three dimensional creations utilizing a monochromatic palette of assorted fibers and techniques - Kumihimo braiding being one of my most recently developed skills.

I have designed special brading equipment which allows me to explore and create larger pieces by braiding over dowels and wire. Currently I combine the Kumihimo with wet felting for my most recent series, “Taking Root”.
